As a nationally registered wildlife sanctuary, nature lovers will find boundless opportunities to see dolphins, manatees, turtles, seabirds and many exotic fish in and on our local waterways. It’s a place where birds and turtles nest, manatees and dolphins play and people relax. Each year from May to November, sea turtles nest on our island during “turtle nesting season”.
Should you be visiting during this time, be advised of the our “yellow light districts” along the shore, where we dim the lights to ensure that turtle hatchlings head toward the Gulf. It’s a special time of year when they tell you a bit of the history of the island.
Even their nesting locations tell a historic tale of the landscape that is Anna Maria Island. These sanctuaries and estuaries make Anna Maria Island the perfect place to experience something special.
Our friendly community and welcoming way of life make Anna Maria Island an unforgettable place to visit. Take a stroll down historic Bridge Street and Pine Avenue, visit Holmes Beach, enjoy our boutique shopping districts.
